Copyediting Case Study – Sweet Babydreams
Stuck with an unfinished German version of their updated website, baby sleep coaches Rachael and Hanna from Sweet Babydreams decided to hire a professional translator to knock their copy into shape and help them attract new clients.
Challenge
“My business partner, Rachael Kullmann, and I own a baby sleep coaching practice. We coach in three languages: English, German, and Estonian, so we need three websites. We launched our new website design in English in October 2019, but updating the German version started to drag on and on because neither of us is fluent in German. And although we had a rough translation of the website done by a family member, we needed someone to edit the translation to make sure it flowed smoothly, contained no grammatical errors, etc.” – Hanna Saars, Sleep Coach and Online Business Manager at Sweet Babydreams
Solution
They decided to hire Silvia Schulz from Win With Words – that’s me! On our first discovery call, we talked about the purpose of their German website and the ideal client they were looking to attract. I proposed changing the tone of voice to a more casual style, using Du instead of Sie and vocabulary that was softer and more soothing to match their brand’s pastel color scheme.
They didn’t have enough budget to copyedit their entire website, so we decided to prioritize and focus on essential pages only. In the end, I spent eight hours knocking roughly 7,000 words of German copy into shape.
On our second call, we brainstormed suitable, catchy names for their coaching system and downloadable booklet.
Results
The revamped website gives tired parents all the information they need in German – and a professional platform for Rachael and her team to sell their coaching services to new German-speaking clients.
